Mental Simulation

چکیده
According to the theory theory of folk psychology, our engagement in the folk psychological practices of prediction, interpretation and explanation draws on a rich body of knowledge about psychological matters. According to the simulation theory, in contrast, a fundamental role is played by our ability to identify with another person in imagination and to replicate or re-enact aspects of the other person’s mental life. But on each side of the theory versus simulation debate there are significant differences of approach. On the theory-theory side, some use the term ‘theory’ in a narrow sense to require that the body of knowledge about psychological matters should be organised around generalisations that have the status of psychological laws. Others use the term in a more inclusive sense to encompass any body of information or misinformation about psychology. Some theory theorists say that the theory is learned, either by processes analogous to scientific investigation or else by cultural transmission. Others say that the theory is, to a considerable extent, innate. On the simulation-theory side, some think of mental simulation as restricted to the re-enactment of rational transitions in thought. Others contrast the simulation approach with accounts of mental-state attribution that make use of an assumption of rationality. Some abstract away from questions about cognitive machinery and describe simulation in personal-level folk psychological terms. Others regard the simulation theory as a contribution to cognitive science.1

The Effectiveness of Mental Simulation Process Products on Academic Stress in Gifted Students
Purpose: The difference between gifted people in personality and environment may also affect their academic stress. The aim of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of process mental simulation on academic stress in sharp-witted students. Methodology: The method of this study was semi-experimental with pre-test and post-test design with control group. The statistical population in th...
متن کاملQueue-Based Cost Evaluation of Mental Simulation Process in Program Comprehension
This paper presents a method to estimate the cost of mental (hand) simulation of programs. In mental simulation, human short-term memory is extensively used to recall and memorize values of variables. When the simulation reaches a variable reference, the simulation can be performed easily if the value is still remembered. However, if not, we have to backtrack the simulation until the value is o...
متن کاملNeuroimaging Studies of Mental Rotation: A Meta-analysis and Review
Abstract Mental rotation is a hypothesized imagery process that has inspired controversy regarding the substrate of human spatial reasoning. Two central questions about mental rotation remain: Does mental rotation depend on analog spatial representations, and does mental rotation depend on motor simulation? A review and meta-analysis of neuroimaging studies help answer these questions. Mental r...
متن کاملElectrophysiological Potentials Reveal Cortical Mechanisms for Mental Imagery, Mental Simulation, and Grounded (Embodied) Cognition
Grounded cognition theory proposes that cognition, including meaning, is grounded in sensorimotor processing. The mechanism for grounding cognition is mental simulation, which is a type of mental imagery that re-enacts modal processing. To reveal top-down, cortical mechanisms for mental simulation of shape, event-related potentials were recorded to face and object pictures preceded by mental im...
متن کاملSentence Comprehension as Mental Simulation: An Information-Theoretic Perspective
It has been argued that the mental representation resulting from sentence comprehension is not (just) an abstract symbolic structure but a “mental simulation” of the state-of-affairs described by the sentence. We present a particular formalization of this theory and show how it gives rise to quantifications of the amount of syntactic and semantic information conveyed by each word in a sentence....
متن کاملSimulation and mental health outcomes: a scoping review
Background A scoping review was conducted in order to map and determine the gaps in literature on the impact of simulation as an educational approach to improve mental health care outcomes. As it became apparent that no literature existed on this topic, the study aimed to examine the educational impact of simulation on mental health education. Methods An established five-stage scoping methodo...
